American Emma Navarro came back from a set down to eliminate defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round Saturday.

Emma Navarro, an American player and one of the few remaining top-10 seeds, mounted a comeback to defeat defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in a thrilling third-round match. The final score was 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Navarro's victory continues a trend of different winners at the All England Club, guaranteeing yet another first-time women's champion at the prestigious tournament.

"I take pride in being tough and fighting until the last point, regardless of the circumstances. It's something I always try to do," said Navarro. She emphasized her determination and refusal to give up, attributing it to her upbringing and family values.

Krejcikova appeared to struggle in the third set, requiring a blood pressure check during a changeover after Navarro broke her serve to take a 3-2 lead on No. 1 Court. Krejcikova received medical attention, consuming a banana and fluids, while Navarro consulted with her coach.

Upon resumption of play, Krejcikova visibly struggled, frequently leaning over with her hands on her knees between points.

"I was feeling worse and worse," Krejcikova admitted. Her loss will cause her to fall significantly in the WTA rankings.

Navarro's success is not unprecedented. She previously defeated Coco Gauff at Wimbledon last year, reaching her first major quarterfinal. She then defeated Gauff again at the US Open, advancing to her first Grand Slam semifinal.

Navarro, aged 24, is set to make her fifth round-of-16 appearance in the last six major tournaments, a feat matched only by Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. She will now face No. 7 Mirra Andreeva, an 18-year-old Russian player, on Monday for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Against Krejcikova, Navarro overcame a set deficit and a 2-1 break in the second set to turn the match around.

"I regrouped a little, tried to slow things down a bit from my side and make her look at some different shots," Navarro explained. "I tried to make her as uncomfortable as I could."

The match's outcome largely depended on Krejcikova's performance. She recorded 34 winners, significantly more than Navarro's 13, but also had 53 unforced errors. Navarro, in contrast, had only 11 unforced errors.

"My slice is coming along pretty nicely. I'm able to use that to my advantage," Navarro commented. "Played scrappy at times. Played tough. Hit some good groundstrokes, as well. I feel pretty good about where I'm at."

Krejcikova's previous Wimbledon victory marked her second major title, following her 2021 French Open win.

With Krejcikova's defeat, Iga Swiatek remains the only major champion in the bottom half of the draw.

The eventual women's champion will be the ninth different winner in the past nine Wimbledon tournaments, marking the longest streak in the tournament's history. Serena Williams was the last player to win consecutive titles in 2016.
