While Ben Duckett hit the headlines for his 149, the England skipper was also full of praise for Zak Crawley's 65 as the openers set up England's tall run chase

Ben Stokes has praised the outstanding 188-run opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, acknowledging it as the cornerstone of England's successful pursuit of a 371-run target against India in the Headingley Test. While Duckett's magnificent 149 stole the headlines, Stokes emphasized Crawley's vital contribution of 65, which provided a disruptive and complementary presence at the top of the order.

"When chasing 370, a strong start is essential. Minimizing early wicket losses is crucial, and the way Zak and Ducky approached it was outstanding," Stokes commented.

He further added, "Zak's innings was incredibly important. Their styles complement each other perfectly. The left-hand, right-hand combination, one tall, one not, makes it difficult for bowlers to settle. Establishing a rhythm becomes a nightmare for the opposition when they are both set. While Ducky scored 149, Zak's 65 was equally vital. He managed the situation brilliantly, recognizing Ducky's dominance and applying pressure back on the opposition. That opening partnership has been consistently excellent over the past few years."

Duckett's dominance against Ravindra Jadeja, especially his audacious use of the reverse sweep, was particularly noteworthy. Stokes regards him as one of the world's best players of spin, especially in utilizing the reverse sweep. "I spoke to him during the tea or rain break. He's one of the best in the world at reverse sweeping and is a fantastic player of spin, particularly on challenging surfaces."

Stokes even sought advice from Duckett during his own innings, seeking ways to improve his approach against spin. "I asked him for his thoughts on how I could improve my chances. I felt like I was either getting forward or back, trying to manipulate the leg side."

"I decided to go in with a clear plan and use the reverse sweep. The conditions were tough, but I remained clear and confident in my approach to put pressure on the fielders."

This victory marked the sixth time England, under Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, have successfully chased down a target of 250 or more in the fourth innings. Stokes believes their simple and relaxed approach is key to these remarkable achievements.

"Me and Baz (Brendon McCullum) keep things simple when it comes to cricket. It's about scoring one more run than the opposition. We try to keep everything as simple and calm as possible," Stokes explained.

"The atmosphere in the dressing room during chases is crucial. The players have a job to do, and maintaining a calm, relaxed environment is important for their mindset when facing pressure in the middle."

"The plan was simple: bat out the remaining overs, and we would win, given the ground's high scoring rate. Even without any extraordinary efforts, the scoring rate has been over four an over, except for Rishabh Pant. It's a very quick-scoring ground."
