Following India's defeat to England in the first Test, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the team management to consider strategic changes to the playing XI. The former Indian captain specifically highlighted the potential inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav in place of Shardul Thakur for the crucial second Test in Birmingham.
Kuldeep Yadav could provide a valuable spin option for India.
Gavaskar emphasized the likelihood of the Birmingham pitch offering assistance to wrist spinners. "Whether Jasprit Bumrah is fit or not, I think Kuldeep Yadav has to come into the team. I do believe that he should come into the team for Shardul Thakur because the Birmingham pitch will be one where there will be just a little bit of help for the wrist spinner," Gavaskar stated.
India's preparations are underway in Birmingham, as they aim to bounce back in the series.
Thakur, who was making his first Test appearance in over two years, had a limited impact on the game. While he did manage to dismiss Ben Stokes and Harry Brook in quick succession during the second innings, Gavaskar felt that his overall performance wasn't convincing enough to retain his place in the team.
Despite having played only one Test in England back in 2018, where he went wicketless, Gavaskar believes that Kuldeep Yadav's variation could be a valuable asset for the team in Birmingham.
Gavaskar also addressed the concerns surrounding the middle order, particularly the performance of debutant Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair. Both batsmen were dismissed for ducks in the first innings, contributing to a collapse after a promising start.
While Gavaskar is not currently advocating for their immediate removal from the team, he hinted at a potential reshuffle if India falls further behind in the series.
"If things don't go well in the second Test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair). I don't want to drop them at the moment. Then I'd also look at Washington (Sundar), so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned," he added.
India will be aiming to level the series when they face England at Edgbaston, with the second Test commencing on July 2.
