Rishabh Pant's Resurgence: From WhatsApp Doubts to Test Domination Against England

Thursday - 07/08/2025 09:12
Rishabh Pant, after a period of self-doubt and intense training, has rediscovered his form, marked by three centuries across formats. His coach, Devender Sharma, advised him to trust his defensive technique and play straighter. Pant's renewed focus on traditional strokes was evident during the Headingley Test, where he even admonished himself for attempting risky shots.

For Rishabh Pant, a quote once served as his WhatsApp display picture: "Everyone works to be seen. I work to disappear." This was during the pandemic when uncertainty clouded his future with the Indian team. Fast forward to the present, and Pant has not only emerged from the shadows but is now shining brighter than ever.

Pant's journey from turmoil to triumph is a testament to his resilience and determination. After a particularly chaotic season, he decided to declutter his mind, even uninstalling WhatsApp and limiting his phone usage.

His now-viral front-flip celebration after reaching a century in the Headingley Test mirrored a similar celebration from his last IPL game, signifying a complete turnaround. Pant's recent form boasts centuries across formats, a feat few would have predicted just weeks ago. While his return to form may seem straightforward, those close to him describe the preceding period as the most challenging of his career.

Devender Sharma, Pant's childhood coach, revealed that the turning point came after a reckless dismissal in the MCG Test, famously criticized by Sunil Gavaskar.

Following that incident, Pant demonstrated newfound resolve in the subsequent Test, enduring physical blows while scoring 40 runs on a challenging Sydney pitch. He then unleashed his natural instincts, scoring a rapid 61 off 33 balls. However, the question remained: which Pant was the genuine article?

Having lost his place in the ODI XI and struggling in the IPL, Pant emphasized in an interview that he was practicing intensely, even developing blisters. He confided that constant overthinking was hindering his progress.

Pant then made the crucial decision to isolate himself from external criticism. Soham Desai, Team India's former strength and conditioning coach, noted Pant's rigorous training routine during his time on the bench during the Champions Trophy.

"He did the most intense sessions, day in and day out. He dragged me into the gym whenever he was free. He didn’t care about fatigue or workload programmes. All he said was he needed to keep working on himself," Desai stated.

Despite his dedication, results were initially elusive. The breakthrough occurred when he consulted with Devender Sharma before the IPL break.

“When he called me, he kept saying that he was training very hard. I had seen his practice videos put up by Lucknow Super Giants on social media. I told him it didn’t seem like he was working on his defence. He has an outstanding defence. I told him to play close to his body and trust his technique to middle the ball more often,” Devender explained.

The lengthy conversation focused on reinforcing Pant's belief in his ability to score quickly and effectively by hitting in front of the wicket, a strategy that had defined much of his career.

Following this discussion, Pant felt a renewed confidence in his batting, highlighted by powerful shots against Kagiso Rabada. His self-admonishment during a failed ramp shot in the Headingley Test – "There is no need to play this shot. You can still get runs hitting in front of the wicket" – underscored his commitment to this approach.

Pant's career is marked by compelling narratives, and this chapter is no exception. While he is undeniably India's most consistent Test batter in recent years, he continues to inspire anticipation. Having revitalized his batting, the challenge now lies in maintaining his focus and assuming the mantle of a leading Test batter, particularly as Team India relies on him in England.
