Google has announced a multi-faceted strategy to bolster the democratic process during the upcoming Indian General Election and safeguard its platforms from misuse. Recognizing its role in connecting users with reliable information, the tech giant is focusing on combating misinformation, including content generated by artificial intelligence (AI).
A key priority for Google is ensuring easy access to authoritative information from trusted sources. The company has partnered with the Election Commission of India to prominently display crucial details on Google Search and YouTube, including voter registration and voting procedures, in both English and Hindi.
YouTube's recommendation algorithms will prioritize trusted content throughout the election period. The platform's homepage will feature trusted content alongside an "Up Next" panel, making election-related information readily available to users.
YouTube will also highlight content from credible sources during key events via its Top News and Breaking News shelves, as well as a dedicated news watch page.
Moreover, information panels will clearly identify the funding sources of publishers receiving public or government funds. Additional panels will provide context for topics susceptible to misinformation.
Google is reinforcing its existing policies to protect the integrity of the electoral process and prevent the abuse of its products and services. These policies apply universally to all users, regardless of content type.
The company is using a combination of human reviewers and artificial intelligence (AI) models to detect and remove content that violates these policies. Google's AI capabilities are enhancing its ability to combat abuse, enabling quicker responses to emerging threats.
Google is committed to transparency in election advertising. Advertisers are required to undergo identity verification and provide necessary certifications from the Election Commission. Election ads must include disclosures indicating the advertiser's identity and location. Google also maintains a searchable hub for all election ads, providing insights into advertisers and their spending.
Google is proactively addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated content. The company has introduced disclosure requirements for election ads containing synthetic content and will soon require YouTube creators to label realistic altered or synthetic content. The new ad policies prohibit the use of manipulated media to mislead voters, including deepfakes and doctored content.
Google has also implemented restrictions on Gemini, limiting its responses to certain election-related queries and prioritizing high-quality information. Features like the "About this Image" tool in Search and digital watermarking for AI-generated images will provide users with context and aid in assessing credibility.
Furthermore, Google has joined the C2PA coalition, a cross-industry initiative promoting transparency and context for AI-generated content. The company has confirmed the deployment of technology to counter harmful AI-generated content aimed at deceiving voters during the 2024 elections.
