Jasprit Bumrah practices bowling at the nets

Jasprit Bumrah was back in training on Saturday, signaling a shift in focus towards bowling as Team India geared up for the crucial Edgbaston Test. The star pacer's return to the nets, after missing Friday's session, has sparked hope, although his participation in the second Test against England remains uncertain.

Following a five-wicket defeat at Headingley, which put them 0-1 down in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the Indian squad wasted no time in starting their preparations. While the entire team attended practice on Friday, the absence of Bumrah and fellow pacer Prasidh Krishna from active drills raised concerns about their readiness for the Birmingham Test.

Saturday's session provided a significant boost to India's pace attack. Bumrah, Prasidh, and Mohammed Siraj were all seen bowling at the nets, with Siraj continuing his batting practice from the previous day. Their return injected renewed energy into India's preparations as they seek to bounce back strongly in Birmingham.

Among the batsmen, Sai Sudharsan, who debuted in the Headingley Test, was the first to practice in the nets on Day 2. Key players like skipper Shubman Gill, vice-captain Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal were notably absent from Saturday’s training, having spent considerable time batting on Friday.

While Bumrah’s return is encouraging, his inclusion in the Edgbaston XI remains uncertain. Having bowled 44 overs in the series opener, the 31-year-old is expected to participate in only three of the five Tests as part of a workload management strategy. Head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized after the Headingley defeat that the decision regarding Bumrah’s participation would be made on a match-to-match basis, regardless of the series situation.

With bowling now taking center stage in India's practice sessions, the team will be hoping that their key bowlers are fully prepared as they aim for a series-levelling victory at Edgbaston.
