In a stunning display of power hitting, Shimron Hetmyer propelled the Seattle Orcas to a thrilling victory over MI New York in the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. Hetmyer's unbeaten 97, capped off with a last-ball six off the bowling of Kieron Pollard, secured a record-breaking run chase of 238.
Shimron Hetmyer celebrates the winning six that secured a memorable victory for the Seattle Orcas.
MI New York had earlier set a formidable target, posting 237/4 thanks to a blistering century from captain Nicholas Pooran. Pooran's explosive innings of 108 not out, which included 7 fours and 8 sixes, was well supported by Tajinder Dhillon's rapid 95.
Despite the onslaught, the Orcas bowlers, Gerald Coetzee and Kyle Mayers, managed to grab two wickets each, momentarily checking the scoring rate.
Seattle's reply got off to a shaky start, losing early wickets in the powerplay. However, a counter-attacking partnership between Kyle Mayers (37) and Sikandar Raza (30) revived the chase. Heinrich Klaasen also contributed a quickfire 26 before falling to Rushil Ugarkar.
Then came Hetmyer's match-winning innings. With the required run rate escalating, Hetmyer unleashed a barrage of boundaries, smashing 5 fours and 9 sixes in his explosive knock. His strike rate of 242.50 underscored the brilliance of his performance.
Needing five runs off the final delivery, Hetmyer held his nerve. Facing Pollard, he expertly flicked the ball over fine leg for a six, triggering jubilant scenes in the Seattle camp.
"This one is one of the best, because our backs were against the wall," said Hetmyer, who was named Player of the Match. "Today is one of those days, where I went with a clear mind and wanted to take the game as deep as possible."
