Following India's five-wicket loss to England in the first Test, former Australian player Brad Haddin urges captain Shubman Gill to improve the team's fielding attitude. Haddin links poor catching to the IPL and emphasizes that fielding excellence requires commitment. India dropped eight catches, costing them dearly, especially with Ben Duckett's match-winning performance.

Haddin Issues Warning to Shubman Gill Regarding On-Field Demeanor Ahead of Edgbaston Test

Former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin has urged India's newly appointed Test captain, Shubman Gill, to reassess his approach following India's recent five-wicket defeat to England in the inaugural Test match of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025 at Headingley.

The loss, despite India showcasing five century-makers, was largely blamed on a subpar fielding display. The team conceded eight dropped catches across both innings, ultimately enabling England to successfully chase a target of 371 runs.

India's costly fielding errors were particularly evident in the case of England's opener, Ben Duckett. He was dropped in both innings and capitalized by scoring 211 runs, including a crucial 149 in the fourth innings that steered England to victory. Duckett's stellar performance earned him the Player of the Match award and gave England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

"Every great team, regardless of the era, shares a common trait: exceptional fielding. I believe this is a legacy Gill must now instill in this team. He requires an attitude adjustment," Haddin stated on the Willow Talk podcast.

The former Australian keeper also highlighted potential concerns stemming from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, suggesting a correlation between the tournament and declining catching standards.

"If you aim to field well and maintain competitiveness, it all boils down to attitude. While technical work and coaching are valuable, they become irrelevant without the right mindset. This year's IPL also witnessed subpar catching, which could be a consequence," Haddin added.

The Indian team's fielding performance overshadowed their batting efforts, where they managed to post competitive totals in both innings. The pace attack, despite being led by Jasprit Bumrah, struggled to make a significant impact, further compounded by the dropped catches.

Team India is currently preparing for the second Test match, scheduled to be held at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham from July 2-6, 2025. Addressing their fielding concerns will be crucial for the team to level the series.

England has already announced its squad for the second Test, with Ben Stokes continuing as captain. Key players such as Jofra Archer, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes are included in the squad, as they aim to build on their series advantage.
