Kajol's comeback to the silver screen in the horror-thriller "Maa" is proving to be a successful one, with the film demonstrating a promising performance at the domestic box office. Directed by Vishal Furia, the movie experienced a significant surge on Saturday, elevating its total earnings in India to an estimated ₹10.30 crore after just two days.
"Maa" debuted in theaters on Friday and garnered ₹4.65 crore net on its opening day, according to sacnilk.com. This exceeded initial trade predictions, which anticipated an opening of approximately ₹3.50 to ₹4.50 crore. The film's production house officially confirmed the opening day figures on X, accompanied by a poster captioned, "Fear Finds Faith – ₹4.93 Cr Day 1 NBOC India."
Saturday witnessed substantial growth, with "Maa" adding ₹5.65 crore to its revenue, bolstered by increased attendance during evening and night screenings. Hindi occupancy rates averaged 26.38% throughout the day, peaking at roughly 38.45% during the night shows.
The film stars Kajol, along with Indraneil Sengupta, Kherin Sharma, and Ronit Roy. The plot revolves around a mother who transforms into the Goddess Kali to break a malevolent curse stemming from fear, blood, and betrayal.
Marking her first significant theatrical release since "Salaam Venky" (2022), Kajol conveyed her enthusiasm before the film's premiere.
"I am very excited. My film is releasing in theaters after a long time and I am extremely happy about it," she stated to ANI.
The actress further commented, "Every actor has to reinvent himself or herself with time. I had never thought I would do a horror film, but here we are. I am extremely proud of this film. The script is quite good. I am a big mythological buff. I love our Indian mythology. We have so many stories. So, I think it was one of my favourite stories.”
Kajol concluded in her signature style, “I am very grateful that I have done this film. I think we have made a very good film. Now the audience will tell... But, Maa ki kasam, humne achhi film banai hai,” she laughed.
Despite a limited release across 1,500 screens in India and facing competition from "Sitaare Zameen Par", "Kannappa", and the Hollywood action-drama "F1: The Movie", "Maa" has maintained its position and appears poised for a strong opening weekend. Kajol's horror film is currently trailing behind "F1" which earned an estimated ₹15 crore in just 2 days of its release.
